Rebel with a heart and Capspace team up to empower young minds and protect young voices

Little Lionheart partnership aims to support, empower, and protect children experiencing abuse.

Capspace is proud to partner with author, illustrator, and child protection advocate, Melanie Jai, to distribute and raise awareness of her new children's book, Little Lionheart.

Rebel with a heart, Melanie, is passionate about creating meaningful change for children experiencing abuse. So, when she came to us with her latest book project, the masterfully written and beautifully illustrated children’s book, Little Lionheart, we wanted to get involved and help ensure it was accessible to as many people as possible.

“Little Lionheart is a wonderful gift to the community. It offers parents and carers a valuable resource to help navigate a very difficult subject matter with their children.” - Tracy Adams, Kids Helpline CEO.

About Little Lionheart

Having experienced abuse in her own childhood, as an adult Melanie became passionate about empowering, protecting, and supporting children living similar experiences. Today, Melanie's mission is to address the difficulties children experience in verbalising their abuse and provide the tools to get help.

Little Lionheart"This book develops and strengthens the idea of non-verbal communication in empowering and protecting children from abuse, for when words seem impossible." - Melanie Jai.

Written for children and compiled in conjunction with Kids Helpline, the book demonstrates a non-verbal communication system that children can use to alert their carers that they need help without the use of words. Recognised by Kids Helpline as a valuable childhood protection resource for early childhood, the book also provides tangible steps to take if there are concerns for a child’s safety.

“Alternative communication methods are used extensively in the treatment of abuse in both children and adults, though are underutilised in the spaces of prevention and children’s literature. Early intervention is key, and this book provides the opportunity for exactly that.” - Melanie Jai, author and illustrator of Little Lionheart.

Aimed at empowering, informing, protecting and supporting children to speak out against abuse, the book uses relatable language and illustrations to help children understand and navigate the difficult pathway of getting help.

Why we got involved

The Capspace team first met Melanie as an artist and child protection advocate. That serendipitous meeting led to a strong and long-lasting relationship that has spanned many years.

After getting to know Melanie, understanding her past, and believing in her bold vision and desire to help as many children as possible, we wanted to get involved.

Melanie's impactful and powerful mission can change children's lives. So, alongside Melanie we want as many children and carers to have access to this book and use it as a resource to get help and end the cycle of abuse.

That's why Capspace was proud to fund the publishing of 2,000 Little Lionheart books and purchase 1,000 to be given away for free to communities who need them most.
